It has internationally recognized expertise in timber and hybrid construction, particularly through its pioneering research in computational design, structural engineering, and digital fabrication of wooden architecture. Landmark experimental buildings and research pavilions developed at the university demonstrate cutting-edge approaches to engineered wood systems, robotic fabrication, and resource-efficient building methods. Through close collaboration between its institutes, industry partners, and global research networks, the University of Stuttgart plays a key role in advancing timber architecture as a high-performance, sustainable solution for contemporary and future construction.

ICD

The Institute for Computational Design and Construction focuses on computational design, robotic fabrication, and building system integration. It develops innovative methods linking form, material behavior, and structural performance with digitally driven fabrication, enabling highly integrated, efficient, and scalable construction solutions.

ITKE

The Institute of Building Structures and Structural Design specializes in advanced structural design and building system integration. It combines material research, computational analysis, and full-scale experimentation to create lightweight, adaptive, and timber-based structures that are efficient, resilient, and architecturally complex.

IABP

The Institute of Building Physics and Building Performance Assessment provides expertise in environmental assessment and sustainable building performance. Using simulations, empirical measurements, and life-cycle analysis, it evaluates energy efficiency, indoor comfort, and environmental impact, ensuring innovative constructions are sustainable and high-performing.

IWB

The Institute of Lightweight Construction and Wood Technology specializes in timber engineering and lightweight construction. It develops modular, multi-story timber systems, optimizing structural performance and fabrication techniques to create efficient, sustainable, and high-performance wood-based building solutions.

MPA

The Materials Testing Institute offers expertise in testing, characterization, and assessment of construction materials and components. It validates structural behavior, material performance, and compliance with standards, supporting innovative timber, hybrid, and lightweight building systems with reliable, safe, and durable solutions.

BUILT CoLAB is a collaborative research and innovation hub dedicated to advancing the digital and ecological transformation of the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) sector. It brings together knowledge centers, industry, and end-users to accelerate the transfer of technology from research to market, increasing productivity, competitiveness, and sustainability across the built environment. Focusing on the full life cycle of buildings and infrastructure—from design and data-driven manufacturing to operation, maintenance, deconstruction, and recycling—BUILT CoLAB promotes BIM-based digitization, digital twins, modular construction, robotics, and advanced manufacturing technologies. Through strong national and international partnerships, it positions itself as an incubator and demonstrator of innovative solutions, reducing the risks of knowledge and technology transfer while contributing to a resilient, intelligent, and sustainable future for the AEC sector.
